Next time you are in the city, a tour with Bogdan is a must, in order to learn about the good, the bad, the tasty and the secrets of Bucharest.

Where are you from and what led you to Bucharest?

I was born in the countryside, on a small farm, just a few kilometres away from Targoviste, the old capital of Romania, the place from where Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula ruled most of the time. I moved to the beautiful city of Bucharest in 2012 for my studies. I fell in love with this city also by studying about its history at the University of Bucharest, founded in 1864, where I graduated from and then I decided to stay.

How did you end up becoming a tour guide?

During my masters program I started a job as a front desk receptionist at a beautiful family owned hotel. Shortly after, I became the day shift manager and started organizing tours for the guests. This way, I got the chance to meet some of the guides that shared their experience and we became friends. It felt so tempting. During this job I also attended the Work and Travel Experience program and got the chance to work in the United States Stowe-Vermont and Grand Marais-Minnesota) and visited many sites during our travels. I made a lot of new friends, and I felt like I wanted to share with them stories about my country and my city. This really made me take a fast and changeling decision to become a tour guide. And I don’t regret anything!

What about Bucharest makes you proud?

Bucharest is very eclectic. From the oriental touch and 19th century french architecture to the modern influence, all of them blending together without any straight lines to separate them. People are nice and very different. A Lot of places to hang out. You’ll never get bored.

Do you have any favorite local traditions?

I like Christmas and Easter traditions, but also things that we do when it comes to the big steps of life (birth, marriage, death). All of them include crazy traditions and superstitions, but most importantly = food. Amazing dishes, homemade of course, are my favorite elements when it comes to local traditions.

What’s your favorite neighborhood in Bucharest?

My favorite spot in Bucharest is Obor Market, for sure. A very large place where the real people of Bucharest and surroundings gather to socialize and to shop for groceries. Peasants, locals, fancy guys, travelers, all of them meet in this place, surrounded by a market full of color. Vegetables, meats and cheeses, street foods, anything, and everything. Over here we say that if you need anything in the world, you’ll definitely find it at Obor Market.

What do you think travelers should eat and drink when in Bucharest?

Micii with local light mustard (goes together like the horse and carriage) is my favorite dish, but they have to be from Terasa Obor and for drinks, the local beer. Enjoy!
